Tourist car routes 14-18

Following the commemoration of 100 years of the 'Great War', Westtoer developed six First World War-themed tourist routes throughout Flanders Fields in cooperation with participating boroughs. These routes cover the Westhoek, each with a different angle. Each route averages 70 kilometres and takes you to the most important WWI sites in the Westhoek. Three have been translated into English:

• Ypres Salient - 70 km - From battlefield to killing field • Market Square Ypres (Grote Markt Ieper)
• Life at the Front - 74 km - Little Paris and the gates of hell • Tourist office: Grote Markt 1, Poperinge
• Pioneer - 75 km - The German masters of concrete in the trenches • Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917: Berten Pilstraat 5A, Zonnebeke

The car roadmaps are available from the tourist offices in the Westhoek and can be ordered from Westtoer on T. +32 50 30 55 00 and shop.westtoer.be (€ 6).

The 6 car roadmaps are available in a box set (€ 30 - only available in Dutch). The six routes have also been compiled into a general map: '14-18 Car route map’. One side of the brochure shows a map with the six routes, and the other side provides practical information relating to each route as well as an overview of the most important WW1 sights that can be found on each route.

App 'Tourist car routes Flanders Fields'

This app takes you along the most important sites and places of the Great War in Flanders fields. The app contains pre-defined routes (Pioneer, Ypres Salient, Life at the Front,...), but it's also possible to compose your own personal tour based on your own intrests. The app contains more than 100 points of interest, out of which you can make a choice. The app is illustrated with archive material such as photos, texts and audio fragments. During your quest, you will meet people who will tell you their own Great War story. This app is available for free on the Appstore and Google Play.
